Kissing Gourami

Helostoma temmincki

I don't think I've actually owned a kissing gourami since I was 15, but I do remember the one I had well. These are fish with such great personalities, and I just had to put up a profile, since Craig had such a nice picture of his pink kisser (who is about 4 years old), shown above.

There is also a wild-type brown form that is more rarely bred. Like all gouramis, they have their own character, and some are more aggressive than others, but most are not too bad, so long as they have room to establish territories. Please note that unlike the dwarf gourami, these guys grow huge... over a foot in length! So they are not for smaller tanks, plan ahead.

And then there is the behavior they are known for--"kissing". This is not really an affectionate smooch.

The males are locking jaws to prove domination and territoriality. All in all, a very amusing fish if you have the room for one!

Mating gouramis is very similar to mating bettas. Likewise, they are also labyrinth fish that can breath from the surface, and build bubble-nests in which to care for their young.
